High availability for DHCP

- The next topic for discussion is high availability for DHCP. High availability means the system is available at all times. What that means is if a server fails, then the service that that server supports is still available on another server. Back before Server 2012, this high availability was difficult to acheive in the Windows environment. In the case of DHCP, we can provide high availability in two ways. One, we can provide DHCP failover, and two, we can provide DHCP load balancing. In the case of DHCP failover, you basically have two DHCP servers to provide addresses and option configuration settings for the same subnet or scope. In this way when one of the servers fails, the second server is available to take over for the first server. For failover to work, the second server has to be aware of existing lease information, and so the first server has to share that information with the second server in a constant relationship that goes back and forth to keep everything updated.
