Configure GlobalNames zone
- Next I'd like to go ahead and talk about configuring GlobalNames zones. GlobalNames zones provide single-label name resolution for your DNS zone. This allows a single name to be translated to multiple IP addresses. Further, this doesn't require you to use a fully qualified domain name to do it or FQDN. This also allows you to replace a WINS server in an environment where you're still using WINS servers. In order for GlobalNames Zones to work, you need to use an alias CNAME record to populate your GlobalNames zones. You can do this by mapping a single-label name to an existing fully qualified domain name. This in turn provides a single-label name resolution for both IPv6 and IPv4 addresses. The main drawback to using GlobalNames zones is that you have to populate the zone manually by creating CNAME records for each single-label name that you want to use.
