- Now we've had an overview of various DNS record types, let's go ahead and look at specific resource record types in more detail. The first one to look at is the A and AAAA resource record type. The A resource record type is used with IPv4. The DNS client queries the DNS server with a host name. The DNS server then checks its own database to see if it has a matching A record inside the server that returns the IPv4 address of the host name the client is querying about. The A resource record is generated automatically when IPv4 addresses are handed out to DHCP clients by the DHCP server. You can also create something called a Static A record, and this is bascially an A record that you create manually, as opposed to creating it automatically when issuing IP addresses with DHCP.
