How cool is the Scrivener corkboard? Laura Bergells shows you why she loves it. Hint: the corkboard lets you view and sort your work in a fun, familiar, and tactile way. It lets you see your work as a storyboard.
- [Instructor] I love working in Corkboard mode. It lets me see my work in storyboard form, so I can have a broad overview of my entire project. The corkboard not only lets me sort and organize major concepts, it also lets me add helpful project details. Let me show you why I love it. First, I'm going to select a folder in my binder. I think I'll select Assembling a Core Crisis Communication Team. Then I'll click on the second icon in Group mode. This is Corkboard mode.
Now you'll be able to see each document in this subfolder represented as an index card. I can sort my work by dragging and dropping cards. As I rearrange cards, notice how the binder keeps up with my reordering. I can also add and delete documents while I'm in Corkboard. I can click the plus sign to add a card. Note that Scrivener also creates a corresponding document in the binder when I do.
I can also hit the trashcan icon to delete this card, and it goes away in the binder as well. Scrivener automatically populates each index card with the first words you type in the editor but you can overwrite these words if you like. For my work in instructional design, I'll often write learning objectives on each index card. I can click into each index card and edit these as I wish.
For example, if this was a novel, I might instead write a synopsis on each card. This kind of metadata helps keep me focused and organized as I write and edit. If you want to change the appearance of your index cards, go to the bottom right. Adjust the index cards to reflect your own personal tastes. For example, you can adjust card size, ratio, spacing, and more. Those are just some Corkboard basics, but let me share one more advanced task you might want to try in Corkboard.
It's called Status. Go to View, then hover over Corkboard Options. Next, click Status Stamps. To keep track of your writing progress, select a card, right-click, select Status, and choose where you're at with your writing. If I'm done with the first draft, for example, I might mark it as such before I send it off to my editor. I'll go ahead and work on other areas marked To-do.
If I get revisions back, I'll make changes and mark them as Revised Drafts. I can go on in this manner until I mark my drafts as final. The corkboard lets me see at a glance where I am with writing each section. Take some time to get a feel for Corkboard mode. See how well you like dragging, dropping, and sorting your work.
