The output pins on the Raspberry Pi GPIO are only designed to provide a signal and are not able to provide significant current. This video describes how to prevent over-taxing the output pins and three things to watch out for: Overdrawn current, back voltages and short circuits. Tools and techniques for preventing thise conditions are discussed, including diodes, power transistors, insulated jumpers and a project box.
