What is SVG?
- [Instructor] SVG is an acronym for Scalable Vector Graphics, a graphics format that is becoming the go-to solution for icons, logos, and many other graphics on the web and in mobile applications. Based on the sudden uptake in usage of and tooling for SVGs over the past several years, you'd think this format was relatively new. But, no. SVG as a format has been around for a very long time. The specification was introduced by the World Wide Web Consortium, or W3C, all the way back in 1999 and has been in use in various applications since then. The reason we've only started talking about SVGs on the web in the last couple of years is while the standard is old, browser support has only become reliable more recently. So what are SVGs and why are they so popular and important today? The answer is in the full name. SVGs are literally Scalable Vector Graphics. Scalable as in can be rendered in any size and resolution. Vector as in created by drawing vectors that have strokes and fills. And…
