- [Adam] Hi, my name is Adam Wilbert, and welcome to SQL Server 2016: Provision a Database. In this course, we're going to look at several ways to get a SQL database server up and running, from deploying an instance on your own local hardware to leveraging Microsoft Azure's cloud platform to create virtual machines or hosted SQL database servers. We'll cover lots of different options and we'll see the benefits and trade-offs that each bring to the table. The course will start with a look at Azure's platform as a service offering Azure SQL Database. We'll see how to deploy a database and choose the service tier that fits our budget and our performance requirements, and I'll show you how to securely connect to the database using Management Studio on your local computer.
Then we'll look at deploying a virtual Windows server machine that we can configure with an edition of SQL server of our choosing. We'll see how to add additional disk storage and adjust the server's performance settings. Finally, we'll close out the course with a look at migrating existing on-premises databases up to the cloud infrastructure in order to allow you to focus more on the development of your databases and less on the management of the server hardware and software patches. There's a lot to cover in the world of provisioning SQL databases, so let's get started.
