Planning for partitioning
- In this section, I'd like to talk about using partitioning in SQL Server 2012. Normally, a table exists entirely inside of one file group, but we can use partitioning to split a table into multiple file groups. There's a few different reasons you'll do this. The hypothetical we're gonna go through in this exercise is that we've determined that historical data is less important than our current data. So, some of our different orders tables have a long history of data. The most recent data is the most important to us. We want the highest performance with that and that data needs to be backed up the most often. The old data is not as important to us and also, old data doesn't change as often, or doesn't change at all and therefore, could be backed up less frequently. So, by using partitioning, we can take the data in these orders tables and make sure that the newest data is in the primary file group and the older data is in a secondary file group.
