- [Narrator] When planning for a new SQL database one of the primary decisions that you'll need to make is where it's going to reside. In the past your only option was an on-premise installation of SQL Server, but with the capabilities of Azure we now have two additional options that need to be considered. In the traditional model of installing SQL Server instances on your own hardware, you are responsible for maintaining every part of the system from the physical hardware and networking, installing and upgrading the operating system, installing the server software, and applying security patches and updates. And all of that is in addition to managing the databases themselves. In this model the entire system, end to end, is your responsibility to maintain and keep healthy. This model provides a lot of flexibility but is expensive in terms of labor hours and capital expenditures.
