Create a dataset
- We've identified the database that our report is going to pull data from with the data source. Now, we need to get more specific and choose what columns and rows from what tables we want to retrieve. We do this by creating a dataset. Just like with a data source, there's two different ways to create a dataset. You can either come up here to the new menu and choose dataset from the popup. Or, you can right click on the Datasets folder, and choose Add Dataset. Both procedures will start the same work flow. First, we need to name the dataset so that we can recognize what information it's gathering later on. This name can be anything that you like, it doesn't have to relate to the names of tables or anything in your database. I'm going to call mine People. We have the option of using a shared dataset, but our report server doesn't have anything yet. So I'm going to create this dataset directly inside of this report by choosing the embedded option.
