Considerations for building a data warehouse

In this section, I'd like to talk about some different hardware considerations for a data warehouse. this course is mostly focused on developers but, often developers are asked to give input on what hardware should be purchased or what hardware should be upgraded. We're going to talk about hardware in four distinct categories: network, memory, processor and, disk. So, let's talk about each of these individually. Network bandwidth is typically not a big problem for data warehouses. A modern 10 gigabit or 1 gigabit network should be plenty of bandwidth to handle the day to day operations of a data warehouse. We do need to be concerned about a connection to the internet. If your ETL process is pulling data from an external source and we're going to pull data over the internet, it is plausible you could saturate that link. The consequences of that could vary.
