- [Instructor] Given that classification is one of the most important topics in Applied Analysis, you have a lot of different options for doing this. In addition to the clustering methods we've talked about earlier, the hierarchical clustering and the k-means clustering, which simply trying to find are there groups in your data, classification assumes that you have pre-existing categories, and you're simply trying to find out what variables can you use to predict who goes into which category. It's like having existing medical diagnoses, and you're trying to figure out whether this case has this particular disease or this one has that one, and so there are a lot of different methods for doing this. One of the easiest, at least conceptually, is what's called k-nearest neighbors, or KNN. Now, to avoid confusion, we had k-means and k-nearest neighbors.
