Reversing values with syntax

- [Instructor] One of the things that you don't want to have happen when you're gathering data is to have people answer questions without really paying attention. And, consequently, it's a common practice to sometimes switch variables from one direction to another so people can't just put the high scores all the way through or the lowest scores. And these are called reverse variables. The trick is if you're going to combine things, then you need to re-reverse them and get them all back in the same direction. And, fortunately, like we saw with recording variables to group categories, recoding variables to reverse scores is a simple procedure in SPSS. And, as before, you have two options. You can do it either with the menus or with syntax. But let me give you an example first with the menu. So here I have a variable Scale_0_6, because it's from zero at the low end up to six, which is the high end. And to do this in SPSS…
