Recoding with Optimal Binning
[Instructor] - When it comes to binning variables and truthfully when it comes to almost anything in data analysis, you can take a theory driven approach or you can take a data driven approach, and optimal binning is one method of taking a data driven approach to deciding where cutoffs should be on variables to provide an optimal level of separation between different groups on that variable. Let me show you how this works. Let's go up here to Transform and come down to Optimal Binning. When I click on that I get to choose the variables that I want SPSS to look at to see if there's a way to split them up so they better separate on particular categories. To do this I'm going to take all of these quantitative variables, the five personality variables and the 12 Google correlated variables and I'll put them over here, and then it wants to know what I'm optimizing them for, that is, what categorical variable are we trying to…
