- [Instructor] SPSS is a powerful program, and it's got a lot of options available to you. Your life is going to be a little bit easier, and things are going to be a little bit more structured if you set up some of the options or preferences first to best match the way you personally like to work with data. To get to those on a Macintosh, you go to SPSS Statistics, and then to Preferences. What I want to do is walk through some of the options available to you, just the ones that are personally important to me. You'll see that there are a lot of other ones you can work with. The first one is here under the general tab, and the idea is that variable lists. When you're looking at the list of variables when you're doing a command, you can display that either by the display labels, that is if you give a more descriptive name, or by the actual name, which is usually kind of a cryptic, short name.
