Hierarchical clustering
- [Instructor] One of the most common tasks of applied data analysis, say for instance, in marketing, is finding out what groups of people or cases are similar to one another. In marketing, you might want to give them the same appeal or offer. Or in medicine, you might want to find what groups of patients have similar symptoms so you could potentially give them the same kind of specialized treatment. One of the most useful ways of going about finding these groups or these clusters, is with something called hierarchical cluster analysis. And what this lets you do, is it lets you start with all of the cases apart and then combining them based on their similarities in the dataset that you provided to them and you continue until you have as many groups as you want. Now the process actually goes until they're all together but you can cut it off where it makes the most sense for you. To do this in SPSS, what we need to do is go…
