Creating dummy variables
- [Instructor] Sometimes simpler is better and you may have a variable that has multiple categories in it but sometimes you want to deal with just a yes, no, two at a time. That's sometimes called a dummy variable. Now, I personally prefer the name indicator variable because it's indicating membership yes or no in a particular group. This is important, for instance, if you're going to be doing regression models and you're including a variable with multiple categories and interpretation sometimes a lot easier when you're dealing with this yes, nos. There are two different ways you can do this in SPSS. The first one is using a special command under Transform that's called Create Dummy Variables. And all you need to do here is pick the variable that you want to change. Again, it's usually a category, a nominal variable with more than two groups, so I'll pick, for instance, this one right here, Personality Region because…
