- [Instructor] SPSS makes it really easy to do a lot of very fabulous, fantastic, automatic forms of data preparation. On the other hand, sometimes you want to be a little more in control and know exactly what's happening or you want to try to keep things simple which is generally less prone to error and better suited for generalized ability. And so perhaps when it comes to creating new variables in your data set, you just want to do it manually and the compute commands in SPSS are going to give you the control that you need in that particular situation. Let's say for instance that I want to create a new scale variable that's based on a few of the Google correlate variables, remember, GC01 through GC12 stand for Google correlate and these are numbers, they're Z scores, that tell us how common particular search terms are in a state by state basis.
