- [Instructor] You may be familiar with the world of data science and machine learning. Now, even though standard statistical analysis and machine learning both deal with data they tend to approach it in different methods and they have different goals. Machine learning and data science is often built around prediction and they may use what are called black box algorithms. These are methods where you feed the data in and they can do some very sophisticated processing and they produce predictions that may be accurate but it's not always really easy to figure out exactly what happened in between. This is in contrast to standard statistical methods like linear regression where it's perfectly clear what's going on. But, that's usually used to understand what's happening as opposed to making accurate predictions. Those aren't necessarily incompatible goals but they often don't get together in the real world.
