Working with derived parts
- [Instructor] One of the ways that you can leverage existing geometry and take advantage of file references inside of SolidWorks is by using the derived part feature. So traditionally in SolidWorks, we're used to creating parts, inserting them into an assembly, and then building up a bigger assembly that maybe contains a set of sub assemblies inside of it. With this method, we're gonna start with a part and insert an existing part into it so that we can keep creating geometry and keep going throughout our workflow without having to worry about assemblies and things like that. So let's just jump into it here. I've got a simple block here with a hole, and I'm gonna insert a pin into the center. So I'm gonna go ahead and click on insert. Go down to part. You can see it's just bringing up the open dialogue box like we're used to seeing. I'm gonna select this pin and hit open. And now you can see it's changed the property manager over here and we have a bunch of options. The first thing…
