Importing 3D geometry
- [Lecturer] When importing 3D geometry into SOLIDWORKS we have a few options. The first one is the classic method, I simply go up to the Open dialog box, navigate to the file that I want to open, in this case it's going to be a STEP file, and then click Open. You can see that after doing some translation I'll get my 3D model created on my screen. For this situation I'm going to choose No to the Import Diagnostics and the feature recognition so I can simply see the native form. So that's one way. Now I'm not going to save this file. The other method is drag and drop. So here I've already navigated to that location, I have the same exact file, and I'm simply going to click on it and drag it in. You can see that it had the same effect as before, and the results are also the same, a nice, clean 3D model. The last option that we have available is going to the Open dialog box again, but instead using the filters so that we can filter out to the file type we want. In this case I'm going to filter to that STEP file again and click on it. This can make it easy when searching through a large directory filled with different versions of the same file type. Click Open and the same result. It is possible that when opening the same imported geometry that you will get different results based on the computations done in the background, but this is only typical for very large and very complex geometry that includes surfaces. I'm going to go ahead and close this option and that's how we open imported geometry in SOLIDWORKS.
