- [Kipp] Wouldn't it be nice if you could design a mechanical part in a CAD program and then have that part be manufactured exactly to your specifications? All too often, information about how parts will fit together is lost when CAD data is sent to manufacturers. By using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing techniques, this information can be included in the CAD files and used by the manufacturers to ensure quality parts. Failed and out-of-tolerance parts are expensive and they can delay the manufacturing process.
These parts often result from incomplete information or a breakdown of communications between the designer and the manufacturer. In this course, we're going to introduce Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing. GD&T is a language based on a set of industry standards that will enable you to fully communicate your design and tolerance constraints to a manufacturer. Along the way, we will review symbols and notations from Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing standards and describe how they relate to CAD geometry and manufacturing practices.
