Join Gabriel Corbett for an in-depth discussion in this video Flipping offset direction and end caps, part of SOLIDWORKS 2016 New Features.
- (Voiceover) The offset entity command has been greatly improved inside a SolidWorks 2016. To get started, let's go ahead and click on plane 1 and start a sketch. Let's go up here to Offset Entities and I'm going to choose my first offset is going to be this outside edge here. Notice that brings it right into our current sketch. I'm going to go ahead and click on the spacebar and click Normal, too, so I can see my sketch. Let's click on that one more time and click on Offset Entities. You can see that I then have a offset out to the outside with the ability to reverse it to the inside and I have the ability to create offset geometry that's construction geometry.
But for this case here, let's go ahead and just choose that line and click on Offset. Now that I have that there, I can use it one more time. Click on Offset Entities. Let's make sure we go to the insides, reverse it to the inside here and I have the ability to now create end caps with either arcs or lines. Click on Offset Entities and now I've created a nice offset entity with some end caps. I can also do the exact same thing for the outside of the shape. So click on Offset Entities one more time. Click on the shape itself and you can see I have a profile around the whole outside. I have the ability, of course, to bring it to the inside or outside, your choice.
I can make it bi-directional if I wanted to, obviously cap the ends. And I can also change it to construction geometry. Both the base and the offset geometry have that option now. Now, in this case, I'm going to make the offset .05 and then click on OK. We also now have the ability inside of SolidWorks 2016 to flip the offset to the other direction. Go ahead down here and click on the dimension itself and click on this little Reverse Offset. It brings it to the inside. Click OK. And that makes it way easier to just switch the offset.
Before, you had to either delete it or do some other work around to bring your offset to the other side. Now it's literally one click inside a SolidWorks 2016.
