Extrusion and the Hole Wizard

- [Instructor] So now that we've designed the base of the robot, let's take a quick look at designing the first link of the robotic arm. So here I'm going to start by sketching on my top plane. So I create a new sketch. And I'm just going to sketch a circle here, and give this a dimension of 140 millimeters so it will line up nicely with my base. And then I'm going to extrude this. Again, that's a 10 millimeters. And then from here I'll do a small extrusion on the bottom side of my link here. So I'll create a new sketch, do maybe a offset again here of that five millimeters and I'll reverse that so this is the portion that's going to attach to the base. And I'll say okay to that sketch, and extrude this. Again, that three millimeters just so it will insert nicely into the base of my robot. Now from here we might need a couple other features. I'm going to be mounting some motors on this link, so I might need a bit of a plate here, maybe on the front plane as well, so I'm going to create a sketch on the front plane here. I'll jump normal to that sketch. I'm just going to draw a fairly simple sketch here. Something like this and then I'll finish it off with some dimensions. And then arc up at the top. I'd say some kind of general shape like this. And then I'm going to try to finish this off with some dimensions. Just say it's 25 millimeters away from my origin here, and maybe five millimeters above my origin is where I'm going to start this profile. The radius of the circular portion of my plate here, let's say 40 millimeters, and this is where I'm going to mounting a motor, for example. And the total length here, let's say 65 millimeters, and the total height is here, maybe 50 millimeters, and finally I want these two to be tangent. So I have a general profile something like this. Again, this is just a plate that I'll be mounting one of my motors to, and it's looking okay to me here. Looking to be a fully-defined sketch, so I can now extrude this. And I'll take a look. And just to make sure this is perfectly centered, I might use instead of blind, I'm going to change my direction to mid plane so it's extruding on either side, let's say a total of 10 millimeters again. So I'll have some sort of extrusion like this, and finish that off. So now we kind of have the general shape of my first link here that would be attached to my base. And then just to finish it off here I might need to throw in some holes using Hole Wizard, mounting holes for the motors I may be attaching. So let's start with the motor directly on my base here. I'm going to go into Hole Wizard here. I'm just going to use maybe some threaded holes here. I'll use ANSI metric standards again. And let's see it's maybe M4. And I can change Through All, maybe I don't want these Through All. Maybe I want blind, let's try blind here. And then let's try to position these holes. I'm going to jump to a top view. And I'll position these holes somewhat like this. And then finish them off with some dimensions. So I'll throw in some dimensions here. And the distance between these holes here should match up to the mounting holes that I'm going to be using for the NEMA motor, in my case. So make sure to double-check those dimensions, but in my case here it's going to be 47.244 millimeters. And I'll make sure that these holes are aligned vertically. And these holes here would be aligned horizontally. Horizontally, and then finally vertically. And then a couple more dimensions here. Want this to be 47.244 as well. And then I'll say those mounting holes maybe 10 millimeters, or maybe even five millimeters from my origin there. And then also I want these centered about my origin here, so that's going to be 23.622 millimeters to make sure those are centered nicely. And now it looks like these mounting holes should hopefully be oriented the way I'd like to make sure that they'll nicely match up with my NEMA motor. So I can finish that off. And finish that off. So these holes will be used to mount my motor to my plate here, and then I want a through hole here as well, where the motor shaft would be arranged. So again, I'll go to Hole Wizard, just do a through hole here, let's say. It's maybe diameter eight. And I'm going to make sure I position this right in the middle of where my motor would be. So again, throw in those dimensions as needed. And it should just be, again, 23.622. And 23.622. That should be right in the middle of my motor mount there. Finish that hole off. And in this case, I would want my motor shaft hole to go through all, so I might need to make an edit in this case. I'll just edit that feature, and change instead of just being a blind hole, I'm going to say Through All. Finish that off, and now the motor shaft hole might be going through all. I can just repeat these Hole Wizard steps on this face here in order to generate the mounting holes for the motor needed for my second link.
