- [Instructor] When you're taking the SOLIDWORKS certification exams, you're going to be creating a bunch of parts, and most of those parts are going to have a few things in common. And I've pre-established some templates that have all the kind of defaults already set up for you, which will save you a lot of time. Go up here to click on New, and notice here in the default folder for templates, I have the linked in part, assembly, and drawing, and these are available in the exercise file folder. Also, over here on the left, I have this 1020 steel in the millimeter, gram, second unit system as well as this 1060 aluminum, also in millimeter, gram, second.
If you click on Open, or OK, it's going to open a new part using that default template. Now, over here on the left-hand side, you can see that I already have 1060 aluminum pre-selected. If that doesn't happen to be the material you need to use, make sure you do update it over there before you go forward with your part, because obviously you're going to get the wrong values if you don't have the right material. So make sure you check and double-check that you've got the right material, 'cause everything will be off if you don't check that from the beginning. Next thing I want to point out is that almost all your parts are going to use some form of an equation.
You can see here, I've got a bunch of them already pre-filled out for you. Now, these are the wrong values. Most of the time, when you're given a problem, they're going to give you some values to type in here, so that's when you want to jump in and start editing these values for the equations. Now, there's a couple ways to get to editing these equations. You can right-click here, you can say Manage Equations. That will bring up this dialogue box here, which is a pretty good way to do it, but I actually prefer another way, and let me show you how to do that. Click OK, get out of that. Before we get there, though, up here at the top of the screen, I also want to click on Options, over here under Units, I've already pre-defined the units as a two-place decimal, and that's also important, to make sure that your measurements are coming in with the right amount of decimal places so they match the options inside of the exam.
Go ahead and click OK. Now, my favorite way to get at these tools is to turn on the tools toolbar. Notice it's right over here. If you don't happen to have that already turned on, you can just drag it out, close it down, and right-click anywhere in a gray space up here, and you should get a listing of all the available toolbars. Come on down here to Tools, turn it on, and then dock it wherever you would like. I like to put it over here on the right-hand side of my screen, so I have easy access to the measure tool, the equations tool, as well as the mass properties tool.
Those we're going to be using quite a bit, so having them easily one click away is of great benefit when you're doing the exams. The other thing I want to point out is, make sure, when you're creating parts, at the end of each part, before you move on to the next one, go up here and say File, Save As. And in this case here, under exercise files, I'm just going to put one directly in this folder here. I'm going to call this one, 1.0. Click on Save. That's our new part number. Now, when I'm finished with this part and I'm ready to go to two, go up here to File, Save As, and click on this button down here for save as copy and open.
So click on that one here, and instead of one, let's go ahead and change it to two. And now we have the original copy named number one, and now I'm going to save out copy number two, and it's also going to pop open. Notice if I click on the Window, Tile Horizontally, I have both those parts available to me now. If I ever need to go back to part number one and change it or modify it, it's still open behind the scenes. I can also just easily switch between the two. Now, you can close that part if you want to but you really don't need to. You can just have a couple of different documents open at the same time. In this case here, I'm working on two. Again, when I get finished with this, and I'm moving on to part number three, if it's the same part and we're just going to be modifying it, make sure you keep doing this same step.
Click on File, Save As, make sure you're clicking on the Save as copy button and give it a new number. Let's give it three, and go ahead and click on Save, and there you have the new version of the file right there and ready for your next part. Hopefully, a few of these templates and toolbars will help out your exam-taking and just make things a little bit quicker, smoother, and easier for you to take the exam. Definitely double-check you've got the right material, the right units, and the right amount of decimal places in your answers. Definitely verify those and good luck with your exam.
