Join Gabriel Corbett for an in-depth discussion in this video Advanced Hole Wizard, part of SOLIDWORKS 2017 New Features.
- [Instructor] Many of you are probably familiar with the Hole Wizard and now in Solidworks 2017 we have an Advanced Hole Wizard. To get to it click on the drop down below Hole Wizard. Come in here to Advanced Hole, click on that one and now you're going to be looking at dialogue very similar to your standard Hole Wizard. However, we have the ability to kind of stack individual holes on top of each other to come up with a more advanced or complicated style of hole. So my very first option here is the front/side type of hole. So I'm going to click on the drop down here and choose either counterbore, a countersink, a tapered pipe tap, a backside counter bore, countersink, or a backside or far side tapered tap.
As well as a through hole and a standard tap. So I'm going to go ahead and just choose a nearside counter bore. There he is. Let's go ahead and choose the face I want to place it on. which is going to be this top face here. I'm going to choose a socket head cap screw and I'm going to choose a half inch size. Alright so there's the beginning of my hole. Now I can add a new element above this or below this and, in this case, I want to go below. So here's above and here's below. So make a new element below that and in this case I want to make a countersink. So I'm going to choose countersink and, as far as the size, I'm going to choose 82 degrees and I'm going to choose 3/8.
Alright, looks pretty good. Now let's add one more element below that one and I'm going to make a screw clearance for 3/8 inch bolt and, as far as the end condition, instead of blind I'm going to say up to next. Okay that looks pretty good. Now on the back side of this I'd like to add a counter bore as well for that 3/8 inch bolt. So to do that, let's go ahead and move up here to the top and see, I have the option of choosing a far side feature. So click on far side and now it's going to add this little box down here.
It also wants me to choose that backside surface. So here's the backside surface. You can see what's happening there and as far as the hole, I'm going to choose a counter bore on the far side and up to my next element is what we want to choose here. I do need to change this also over here for this hole. Because right now you can see it's red, and it's showing me an error because I don't want to go all the way through the part, like I had originally chosen, I want to change this feature here to up to next element.
Notice as soon as I do that, it fixes it and everything's okay. So if I do choose a backside feature, I want to always make sure I'm choosing up to next element. Alright, now you can see, there's my stack and if I choose any one of these, I can always change the size of the counter bore, the screw head, or anything else I want to adjust. I'm going to change this to a socket head cap screw and as long as everything looks good, now I can go over and jump into the positions. I can place these anyway I want, just like you would a standard Hole Wizard. You can switch over to something like a construction geometry, layout a grid here or box, and snap things together if you wanted to.
I can spin it around so I'm looking normal to it. I can make this vertical. I'm going to grab these, snap these on to the corners, and add some dimensions to get everything looking pretty good. It can get right there. Alright, once you have the holes where you'd like them, these look a little bit too close to the edge, click on okay and then okay one more time and there is our hole. Pretty advanced hole, it would take a lot of different features to create it in the regular Hole Wizard or if you're just creating them manually. We can do it all in one operation inside of the Advanced Hole Wizard or the Advanced Hole.
