- It's rare that a data source is perfect as-is and needs no preparation. After you learn about your data, you'll probably want to make some adjustments based on what you find and what you need. This is where the data step, a powerful tool for manipulating data, really shines. Most analysts agree that manipulating and validating data takes much more time than reporting or analysis. For this reason, you'll appreciate that the data step is a robust, yet simple, programming tool that can do everything from simple querying to providing structure to messy weblogs. In preparing data, you'll learn how to do some common data manipulations, such as filtering rows and columns, computing new columns, and performing conditional processing.
