- [Olivia] The laser cutter is one of the most important tools for a professional model builder. This tool can automate the production of precise and detailed custom building blocks of your scale model very quickly. A laser cutter uses the custom line work you design in a 2D or 3D program as a map to cut out your pieces in real life, using focused light. As a model builder, you will find tons of precision sheet products in a variety of material types and thicknesses that are perfect for laser cutting. I was once told by a colleague that if you can burn it, you can laser cut it. This is kind of true, but just because you can laser cut a material doesn't mean you should. Here, I put together a small list of some good and bad materials to cut. On the good side, we have things like wood products, acrylic, paper, cloth, and leather, and on the bad side, we have things like PVC, vinyl products, ABS, polycarbonate…
