- On our last lesson we started our design development by focusing on thickness, material, and fabrication choices. In this video, we'll continue our design development by modeling the thickness of the surface. Due to some structural concerns I'm going to show you how to vary the thickness of the chair making the chair thicker in some spots than others. Considering that we're trying to make this surface relatively thin, an area that I'm concerned about structurally is this area up here at the top, and right here at the seat. I'm worried that when someone sits on the chair that over time this area might crack. Let's think back to our example of the zig zag chair in chapter four. This chair faced the same sort of structural challenge. We have solved this problem by adding two triangular pieces here and here. Effectively making the areas thicker.
