- [Instructor] Now we're going to build the columns that will hold up our roof. This is the only component in our model that will be 3D printed, because it's really the best way to capture some of the fine detail of this column edge. In most cases, to 3D print something, you need a completely solid model with no openings or intersecting geometry. Now, let's look at a few examples of this column to understand how to best design it. In our first example, we have a column that looks pretty okay but the biggest issue that I can see is that it has a hole in the top and bottom of it. For 3D printing, you really need a completely closed model so the printer can distinguish what is inside the model and what is outside of the model. Otherwise it won't know where to lay material. So, it's very obvious in this example where the opening is, but in other examples it might be a little bit more difficult to determine this. So with this…
