What the estimator expects from a model

- [Narrator] How does a cost estimator use BIM models to execute it's cost estimates to save time and improve accuracy? In case of a pre-construction estimate, the estimator will look at few different things. Quantity of object: the number of objects like doors or windows. The surface: the surface area available for painting or tiles, for example. Rooms, elements or materials can be used to calculate a surface. And also per volume: evaluate the quantity of concrete needed or any other materials. We talked before about what can impact the accuracy and the efficiency of gathering information. And your estimator will thank you. Maybe even give you a discount. Three things to always remember: Use the appropriate codification, clear naming convention, and of course the right tool. Find out what software your estimator uses. It may also recognize standards like MasterFormat or Uniclass, which is also used by the other specification softwares. On the other hand, they can configure or develop their own codification or develop one with you. When it comes to a BIM model that we also call a numeric prototype of the project, and as any prototype it needs to be modeled the same way it should built in the reality. The estimate is just one click away. You can save them weeks of work. I have seen accurate estimates made in two days instead of the usual two weeks.
