Understanding reference planes

- [Instructor] As I've mentioned, reference planes are the backbone of a family. I liken them to the family skeleton or the family structure. You cannot have a parametric family that can be trusted without the use of reference planes. It's really that simple. The first thing you're always going to do when creating a family is establish your reference planes. That being said, reference planes are more than just simple lines. They can also be named and working planes can be set upon them. This video will have us experimenting with what we can do with reference planes. Let's jump into Revit. Under Families, let's select New. Browse to your region. I'm going to go to English Imperial. Notice that we have all of these family templates. We're going to use a lot of these throughout this course, but I'm going to go with Generic Model. Let's click Open. The first thing we'll see is basically a crosshair. Go ahead and select…
