Adding perimeter beams

- Let's start adding some steel beams to our model. The first type of beams I'd like to add are the larger perimeter beams that surround the smaller beam systems, or the filler beams. To get started let's jump into Revit. In our Structural Plans let's go down to Level 2. Before we get started, let's set our view up a little better. Let's set our detail view to Coarse. Let's scroll down and set our Discipline to Structural. Let's hit Apply. Now what I wanna do is click on Beam. Let's hit the drop-down. Let's grab the universal, 356 by 171 by 51. Now what I wanna do is I wanna click on On Grids. We're gonna have to delete a few, but this is really the quickest way. Make sure Tag on Placement is selected. Let's pick a window around our entire model, let's click Finish. Hit Esc a couple times. Let's work on our area here. Let's delete all of these beams. Let's delete this. And then this. And there's gonna be little tiny beams in here, let's get rid of those. Let's come over here. Let's delete this beam, and this beam. Let's frame in a beam from these columns. So I'm gonna right-click on this beam here, and Create Similar, pick a point here, pick a point here, and I'm gonna hit Esc. I'm gonna pick a point here, I'm gonna pick a point here, and I'm gonna hit Esc. Now I'm gonna come back to this area, and I'm gonna frame in my perimeter beams beam by beam, kinda like what I just did. I'm gonna right-click on this beam here, I'm gonna Create Similar. On my draw panel I'm gonna use my Start End Radius Arc button. I'm gonna come around the perimeter, and start framing it in like so. And then my last one will be an arc. And I'm gonna hit Esc. Let's make sure we didn't forget anything. Let's try to make our tag a little smaller. I'm gonna select my Structural Framing Tag. I'm gonna click on Edit Family, I'm gonna select this tag here. I'm gonna click Edit Type. In my Width Factor I'm gonna change it to .8. I'm gonna hit Apply, OK. I'm gonna simply load it back into the project. I'm gonna Overwrite the existing version. And that scrunches it up, makes it a little more readable. Hit ctrl + tab. Close out, and don't save any changes. Our model looks good. So keep in mind, I'm simply guessing at what beams we need here. In many cases you're gonna start a project in the same manner. Remember, you can always resize the beams later.
