Using and modifying the mullion family in the project

- [Instructor] In this exercise, chapter 306, we are going to be using this thing which is the profile loaded into the mullion family in the project. Okay, so if you haven't got this thing loaded yet, just go back to chapter three, find the family file, the RFA and then load it into the project. Okay, you should have this open. So it should just load straight in. You might get an option to save, just cancel that if you don't want to save. And then it opens up in level 1, let's got back into the 3D view and let's have a look at what has happened. So in our project browser, if we scroll down to the families so just make sure the families are expanded, and then we come all the way down to profiles. Open up profiles, and then we can see that the Cill Profile 2 is now in there. Okay, this Cill Profile 2, if we expand that and double click on this, it opens up the type of properties of that profile. And we can see our two parameters that we've got in there. Now the frame depth is actually 75 so we might as well change that to 75 and for good measure, put 150 in that and then say, okay. So we've already done some adjustment. So what happens to this? How do we get this into one of these things that we can use? Well, what we've got to do is come up to the mullions. So curtain wall mullions, this thing here, expand that and then we've got to create a new mullion. Now I tend to categorize them under rectangular mullions, simply because I don't have a section that says bespoke profile mullions, for example. And what you might find, if you've opened up a new project, you've only got the 30 millimeter square and the 50 by 150 by default. Now I've created all these extra ones so we'll be able to use later. The process is really simple and I'll just explain that quickly. So we're going to right click on rectangular mullion, create new type. And then we're going to call this one, Cill2, and then we just click away. And that's highlighted. If we double click on Cill2, then we get the type properties of this rectangular mullion, Cill2. Now under normal circumstances, if you wanted to make just a square sort of shape then you would just adjust these values. The thickness and the width on one side and the width on the other side. The sort of center line of the frame is going to be straddled down the middle. Okay, this is the front to back. This is side to side. If you want to offset side to side, then again feel free to do that. This is how you generate the different sort of sizes that I've got, 50 by 75, 50 by 100. So just change these values. For something like Cill2, we don't bother with the dimensions at all. We've got a profile to load instead. So the profile, instead of the system mullion profile rectangular, we'll hit the drop down, and then we'll just come up and add Cill Profile 2. And then we can say okay to that. The other thing that we could look at is the materials. For now, we'll just leave it as a gray color and let's say okay. So now we've got that profile loaded as a rectangular mullion. So the next bit is just to simply create a new version of this curtain wall. So if you go to the wall tool and we look at this one, curtain wall empty, there's a few others in here as well but it's curtain wall empty we wanted to use, we're going to edit type and we're going to duplicate. You might as well call this Window 2 for argument's sake. Call it anything you like really but Window 2 will do me. And I'll say okay to that. And then we've got to embed different types of mullions in these slots. So a couple of things to look at, we're going to use it for exterior. There's no vertical grid layout and there's no horizontal grid layout. So all we're looking at is the edges and these control the edges. So there's no interior mullion either. So the border type for the side ones are going to be the 75 by 75. Just scroll down and use 75 by 75, near the bottom. And then the border type 2 is also going to be 75 by 75. You can cut and paste it in if you want. It might be a bit easier. So I'll just do that, select that, Ctrl C 'cause I'm going to use it down here as well. And then interior type for the horizontal. We have none there. This is going to be our cill. So click on that and choose Cill2. And then the one at the bottom, Ctrl V, just drop that in and that's done. And then we can say okay to that. So all we need to do now is draw it in. We could go to plan view. So let's go to level 1 and let's look at the properties of our curtain wall window 2 Basie constraint is going to be level 1, top constraint, unconnected. So it's not going up to a level like level 3, that'd be too high. And then I've just created a height of take 1200. So just click and then drag and click again so that's 2.2 meters. We'll just keep it simple for the moment. And then we'll have a look at 3D and see how it's looking. So we've got our frame and we've also got the cill that is looking a little bit off. Okay, it's facing the other way. That really doesn't matter. It's about the position of the cill. If I click on these little things here, the toggle mullion, that's going to prioritize the horizontal over the vertical. We'll do the same thing this side. You can just about see them, click there. So that's prioritized the horizontal over the vertical. However, it's sitting too far forward. So all we need to do is to select our cill and then edit type. And we've got an offset value that we can adjust. Now because it's sitting forward, we need to move it back. So it's negative and then half the distance of the frame. That's 37.5 and then, okay that. That's now jumped back and we are good to go. Okay, so that's it really, that's as simple as it gets. The benefit then is you can select the curtain wall and put it up, or you've got these little handles that you can move sideways. Okay, so that's it really. So in the next lesson, we'll be looking at creating one of these things, a curtain panel with an adjustable depth frame and then we can put all of this together and rebuild that picture window for our Euro house.
