- [Instructor] It's important to have a working DNS setup. The exam only specifies setting up a caching only name server which passes queries onto a master server, and caches the results. However, there are many things that can happen that keep the client from functioning. First, let's double check the etc NS switch file. Type in less, space /etc/nsswitch.conf and hit enter. You'll want to go down to the host line. These entries are used in order of left to right. The first attempt at name resolution will go to local files. This means the etc host file, which we modified at the beginning of this course. After that, it will attempt to resolve via DNS. Press Q. Now let's take a look at the etc host file. Any attempt to reach rhhost1.localnet.com, or rhhost1, will go to the IP address in the first column. If this IP address isn't correct, then name resolution will fail.
