The first major version of NFS was version 2. Version 3 added TCP transport support and other improvements. NFS version 4 changed many things including being easier to manage behind a firewall. File locking and portmapping are now built into the protocol so fewer services need to be run. Also caching and file copies are much faster than before. Version 4.2 added SELinux label support.
- [Instructor] There are many different versions…of NFS in production.…NFS version two is no longer supported…in Enterprise Linux seven.…Enterprise Linux seven supports NFS three, four…and four point one…and if using Enterprise Linux seven point four or newer…supports NFS version four dot two.…The first version that supported TCP transport…when it was introduced, is NFS three.…This should be considered the oldest…practical version to use.…NFS version three on Enterprise Linux seven…supports safe asynchronous writes…better error handling than NFS two…an 64-bit file sizes, allowing access…to more than two gigabytes of file data.…
NFS three can use either TCP or UDP transport protocols.…NFS version four works better through firewalls…and no longer requires the rpcbind, lockd…or rpc dot statd services.…Mounting and locking protocols have been integrated…into NFS version four.…It does still need the rpc dot mountd service…but only to set up exports.…It also supports access control lists…although, they are not the same ACL's that we use on files.…
