The nsswitch.conf file determines in which order sources are consulted for various services. In the case of name resolution, you can choose to query /etc/hosts, DNS or NIS or NIS+. The order in which you place these items in the nsswitch.conf file determines the order in which they're queried. It's also possible to insert conditions in case one method or another isn't available.
