Apache access control can be quite powerful and is handled on the file system directory level. You can require a certain user, group, host, or network. You can also negate the requirement so certain users, groups, hosts, or networks can't access the site. You can also group access control directives inside containers to get more powerful combinations. The default is to allow access if the user belongs to ANY of the requirements. You can also specify ALL.
