- If you enjoy the benefits of shooting in program mode but want more control over shutter speed, then I recommend you try shutter priority auto mode. This mode is useful when shooting things like sports or fast moving subjects and you really need to control the freezing of the action. Or perhaps you want to use a slower shutter to smooth out something like a flowing waterfall. To shoot in shutter priority mode, turn the dial to the TV setting. This stands for Time Value, which is the shutter speed. Now you can use the main dial to adjust the overall shutter speed. As you change the shutter speed, you'll notice that the aperture automatically adjusts to achieve a proper exposure. Again, you could use exposure compensation to further influence the shutter priority mode. As you shorten the shutter speed, the aperture of the lens opens up to let in more light.
