Overview of Reason 11

- [Instructor] Reason 11 comes packed with a variety of tools including virtual synthesizers and sound modules capable of creating many different kinds of sounds from traditional acoustic instruments to evolving hybrid synths that use a variety of synthesis techniques. In fact, Reason is one of my favorite tools for learning sound design, because the layout on most of the synthesizers is straightforward, and the virtual patching and cables does a great job of emulating real patching on hardware. So we're in the Reason Rack here, and if I hit the Tab key, we can get to the back of the rack and you can see all of these virtual wires, and if we grab them, you can see we can adjust the patching and do some really interesting things. I find this great for learning because you can visualize the signal flow of ins and outs more easily, and if you're used to working with any analog synths, you're going to be patching with real cables, so this is really nice and straightforward. I'm going to hit Tab again to get to the front of the Reason Rack. And let's take a look at some of the tools included with Reason here. So in addition to tools that have been found in Reason for a long time now, like the Redrum drum machine, the Subtractor synthesizer, Malstrom synthesizer, or NN-XT sampler, we also have some new instruments and effects. We have a channel EQ, a channel dynamics module that includes a compressor as well as a gate expander, we have a master bus compressor, and then we also have some new effects. We have a quartet chorus ensemble with four different flavors of chorus, which we'll get to a little bit later in the course. We have a sweeper modulation effect, which is also a multi-effect, which we'll cover later in the course. There's also a brand new synthesizer for owners of Reason Suite called Scenic Hybrid Instrument. Scenic Hybrid Instrument is really great for generating evolving pads and textures. We'll cover that one later in this course. And by the way, if you have Reason Suite, you can go into your account and download a number of other instruments and effects that may be included with your version of Reason. I'm using Reason Suite in this course, so you can see, there's a ton of effects and other rack extensions that are available to me that come with Suite. One of the things about the different editions of Reason, by the way, is that there's currently a Reason Suite, Reason Standard, and Reason Intro. The biggest difference is that Reason Suite is just going to come with a few more instruments and effects than Standard or Intro. It also, the price is a little bit more, but I think it's totally worth it. If you're using any of the other versions of Reason, you can totally follow along in this course. And you should be good to go, you just might not have some of the same instruments that we'll be working with here.
