EQ, or equalization, can be used to find the perfect tone for a snare drum, the most pleasing sound for a vocal, or to help a guitar solo cut through the mix. EQ is also important for ensuring that each musical element has a distinct place in the mix, so that these parts do not compete with each other or cause a concentration of too much energy in a particular frequency range in a mix (like the common problem of too much bass energy). Audio engineer and music producer Matt Piper shows you how to use EQ, including high pass filters, to remove unnecessary frequencies from individual instruments, as well as how to boost frequencies to enhance the brilliance of acoustic guitars and to make a kick drum sound big in this online tutorial.
- [Voiceover] I've got my levels and pans set,…so now I'd like to work on the EQ.…And I'm gonna go ahead and hide the effects section…so that the EQ is a little closer…to the bottom of the screen.…Closer to my faders.…And let's listen.…We're gonna kinda start at the left with the guitars.…(upbeat music)…And I'm gonna select this clip and Command L on my Mac…or Control L on Windows.…
To set the left and right locators there.…And just loop that section for a moment.…(upbeat music)…So I know that I do not need…low bass frequencies in a guitar.…So I wanna try to keep everything as clean…and in its proper place, or on its shelf,…in its own little frequency zone.…
So I'm gonna use this high pass filter.…It will let highs pass and filter out lows.…Let's here what that sounds like.…(guitar music)…And that did take a little bit…of the meat out of that sound.…Maybe a little more meat than I meant to remove.…So I see this is set for 187 hertz.…Let's listen to that.…(guitar music)…So I hear the meat comes back when I turn it off.…
