Shutter speed strategies when photographing surf

(waves crashing, footsteps) - I found this beautiful rock, sharp edges, leading out into seastacks. I've paid close attention to the tide. Always understand tides when you're shooting the coast. It's so crucial. Some locations are going to be safer at other times, and also locations would be more photogenic. Now high tide was about a half an hour, 45 minutes ago. And what that tells me is the ocean is slowly receding. So I know I've got some rocks right here. If the ocean was coming up, I'd be in serious danger zone. But because of where I am, and the ocean receding, I feel pretty good. A general rule is never turn your back to the ocean, which I'm doing right now. Thankfully, I have a film crew here with me watching the ocean, calling out big waves so I can turn and run back if I need to. Now what we're trying to do is get the ocean waves with action around this rock, and then of course our seastacks in the mid-ground, and that light poking through in the background. We're really…
