Get an overview of the physical switches that are used with the OpenFlow communication protocol.
(tones chiming) - The Zodiac FX is a fantastic, little, open flow switch, made by Northbound Networks, based in Australia. This is the same company that makes Flow Maker and Flow Maker Deluxe. Which are also really cool pieces of software, which you can run on the HPE Vanisty and controller, to easily program open flow networks. The Zodiac FX first started life as a Kickstarter project, which was successfully funded.
I've got mine running locally and I'm going to show you in a moment how to set it up. But, here's a quick overview. It's a four port, open flow switch. Runs at 100 megabits per second. Three ports, one, two and three are open flow ports and port four is an out of band port, which are used for connections to your controller. So, when you cable this up, ensure that you use port four, as your physical connection to your traditional network, giving you IP connectivity to your controller.
Then you can connect devices to ports one, two and three and program the open flow tables on these ports, to permit or deny traffic. In my network initially, I've connected ports one and two to raspberry pies, And once again, this is really useful, because you can create an entire open flow network, on your desk. The Zodiac FX was actually designed to sit on your desk and not in a data center. It's specifically geared towards learning and development. So, you can develop instant applications using real traffic and real hardware.
Rather than just using mininet, you can use this device to program open flow rules and interact with physical devices in a physical network. There's no need to pay thousands of dollars, to buy a high end open flow switch. For developing and testing, this is a great little switch. And doesn't cost a lot. It only costs 99 Australian dollars. And, as you can see on their website, the feedback has been really positive. It's a great little switch for testing open flow networks and I've founD it to be really useful.
And therefore, I've added it to this course, to give you another option for learning open flow. (tones chiming)
