- [Mark] The Raspbian operating system has a software clock. Whenever the Raspberry Pi's booted, this software clock is updated to the current time. This is done over the internet, so if you don't have an internet connection, the Raspberry Pi will use the wrong time. If you need accurate time on the Raspberry Pi, but are using it somewhere there isn't internet, you need a hardware clock. Hi, I'm Mark Niemann-Ross, and welcome to this week's edition of Raspberry Pi Weekly. Every week, we explore the Raspberry Pi and share useful tips. Adding a real-time hardware clock only involves a few connections and some easy modifications to the operating system. It uses a standard CR2032 watch battery, but can also use the rechargeable LIR2032 if you choose to spend the extra money. To use the TS-3231 real-time clock, use the handout to connect the Raspberry Pi to the real-time clock. Be sure the power is turned off before you make any connections to the Raspberry Pi.
