- [Narrator] In this section, I will explain what is meant by risk factor surveillance. Then I will describe to you the two main systems the US uses for risk factor surveillance: the NHANES and the BRFSS. Later, I will compare the pros and cons of using each dataset for analysis. So what is risk factor surveillance? Well, it's keeping track of the rates of risk factors which are things we do or states we are in that confer risk to our health. Imagine you hear on the radio or read in the newspaper that 14.7% of Massachusetts adults smoked in 2014. Where do you think this number comes from? How do we know this? Usually estimates such as smoking rates come from one of two main surveillance systems in the US: the NHANES and the BRFSS. I'll start with the NHANES.
