- [Instructor] Welcome to chapter one, section two where I give a more formal introduction to you about the BRFSS. This section will describe how the BRFSS is organized through both federal and state government levels. Next, I'll give examples of how the government uses these data. So what specific role does the BRFSS play in US public health surveillance? Let's talk about how we know that 14.7% of Massachusetts adults smoked in 2014. We get this number from a profile report on the health of Massachusetts adults that was written by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. We know smoking questions are in the core, so not only does Massachusetts care about the results, the CDC also cares. Here's an example of what the Feds do with the data. They can make a national map and figure out where smoking prevalence is highest, and then target those areas to encourage smoking cessation.
