- Gartner seems to get the credit for coining the phrase citizen data scientist. the idea is intended to find a way forward during what some describe as the massive shortage of data scientists. Gartner themselves describe it this way, "Citizen data science bridges the gap "between mainstream self-service data discovery "by business users "and the advanced analytics techniques of data scientists." For me, the citizen data scientist in another phrase, self-service analytics, is the distinction without a difference. They are both about using technology to supplement or replace data scientists. The assumption is there simply aren't enough data scientists to meet the demand. I'm certainly a fan of technology but I think these technologies are more valuable for some aspects of the data science role than others.
