Choosing R for a BRFSS analysis: Some considerations

- [Instructor] This movie and the next movie is to help guide you in selecting a statistical software to be used for your BRFSS analysis with me making a pitch for R. The three main choices of statistical software to use for analyzing the BRFSS are SAS, SPSS, and R, although people usually use SAS. I will go over the pros and cons of using the various software for BRFSS, which mainly fall along the theme of SAS being a perceived default choice for BRFSS for a number of reasons, including the fact that R can be very do it yourself. Here is a table comparing SAS, SPSS, and R on a few attributes. Let's start by focusing on the first two. The CDC and the states use SAS to store, analyze, and prepare the BPFSS data, so naturally all the documentation is in SAS, and resources and data files are provided for SAS. In other words, the CDC provides the files in the file format ASCII, which is readable by any software but often needs to be cleaned up. And SAS XPT, or transport format, that can…
