- Often when vendors talk about AutoML, or auto machine learning, they're referring to self-service type technologies but not always. So I'm going to focus on the style of AutoML that is there to assist but not replace the data scientist. These technologies are more like the famous Steve Jobs quote where he describes computers as a kind of bicycle for the mind. AutoML can be thought of as the tool to make the data scientist more efficient. Some of my colleagues think of AutoML and self-service analytics as completely different phenomena. I don't disagree but I think that the way vendors market the two make it hard to tell them apart unless you're a specialist. In both cases, vendors tend to describe tools that do all the work that can be used without expertise and potentially relatively little training. However, if you look critically at the features, you can spot the ones that are really designed for the experts.…
