- [Instructor] When we think about tools, there are a few categories to be aware of. Within the software world, there are many names for different kinds of programs. There's terms like software, system, application, tool, utility, and others and while they each generally have some kind of definition, the lines between them are often a little fuzzy. Software is usually used a general kind of term for something made out of code. We usually think of something like Windows as a system or operating system, we think of Microsoft Word or Adobe Photoshop as an application, and a zip and unzip program as a tool or utility. Small custom that we develop will generally fall into the tool or utility category as well and larger custom software like a CRM or an order tracking system is generally more of an application.
